  • It is a program with individual departures all year round.
  • Peru, with its more than 1,800 species representing 20% of the world total, is the second country in the world with the greatest number of birds and that, makes Peru a true paradise populated by endemic and migratory birds that come from all over the world. BIRDING IN PERU proposes birders a program that will draw a lot of marine, coastal, Andean and jungle of Peru to make the perfect spot for bird watching.

  • The program starts with the arrival at Lima in the afternoon/night. So early check-in is not included if pax arrives in the morning.

DESCRIPTION

1st day Arrival in Lima (154 masl)
Arrival at Lima's international airport in the afternoon or night. Meeting with our personnel, transfer and lodging in hotel (private service, English-speaking assistant). Overnight.

2nd day Lima
Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to Lomas de Lachay (private service, English-speaking guide), National Reserve located 110 km north of Lima. It preserves rich flora and fauna with numerous endemic species, which ecosystem endures extreme conditions of aridity in the summer and enjoys the humidity of misty fogs in the winter. There are more than 55 species in the reserve, such as:
Cactus Canastero (Pseudasthenes cactorum), Coastal Miner (Geositta peruviana), Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia), Andean Tinamou (Nothoprocta pentlandii), American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), Peruvian Thick-knee (Burhinus superciliaris), Amazilia Hummingbird (Amazilia amazilia), Peruvian Sheartail (Thaumastura cora), Dark-faced Ground-Tyrant (Muscisaxicola macloviana), Peruvian Meadowlark (Sturnella belicosa), Chestnut-throated Seedeater (Sporophila telasco), Collared Warbling-Finch (Poospiza hispaniolensis).
Then, transfer to the Swamps of Villa (private service, English-speaking guide), in the Chorrillos district, south of Lima. In this protected area, you will be able to watch more than 150 bird species, half of all bird species in the department of Lima:
Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus), Peruvian Booby (Sula variegata), Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus), Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Puna Ibis (Plegadis ridgwayi).
There are over 70 migratory species and some of them are: Great Grebe (Podiceps major), Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps), Western Great Egret (Ardea alba), Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera), White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis), Osprey (Pandion haliaetus).

3rd day Lima / Cusco (3.399 masl)
Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Cusco. At the arrival, meeting with our personnel and transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon, excursion to visit the historical center (fee entrance to the Cathedral and Santo Domingo/Coricancha are included) and the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay (private service, English/Spanish-speaking guide). Overnight.

4th day Cusco / Huacarpay Lagoon / Cusco
Breakfast in hotel. Departure to Huacarpay Lagoon (private service, English-speaking guide). There are many viewpoints from where you can appreciate various endemic and migratory birds around the lagoon. Box lunch included. Return to Cusco in the afternoon. Overnight.

5th day Cusco / Machu Picchu (2.400 masl) / Cusco
Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to Poroy's station to take the Vistadome train (almost 3.30-hour journey – 1st class, subject to availability) to Machu Picchu town. At the arrival, transfer by public bus to the archaeological complex to visit Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, transfer to the station on foot to take the Vistadome train to Poroy (almost 3.30-hour journey – 1st class, subject to availability). At Poroy, transfer to Cusco (30m) and lodging in the hotel (private service, English-speaking guide). Overnight.

6th day Cusco / Puerto Maldonado / Posada Amazonas
*Collective services at Puerto Maldonado, sharing the English/Spanish-speaking guide.
Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Puerto Maldonado. At the arrival, reception and transfer to the Tambopata River port.
Purus Jacamar (Galbalcyrhynchus purusianus), White-browed Blackbird (Sturnella superciliaris), Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii), Scaled Pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa).
Transfer to Posada Amazonas by private boat, box lunch on board included.
Pied Lapwing (Vanellus cayanus), Collared Plover (Charadrius collaris), King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), Bat Falcon (Falco rufigularis), Olive Oropendola (Psarocolius bifasciatus), Russet-backed Oropendola (Psarocolius angustifrons, Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata) and Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona).
Upon arrival, the lodge manager will give a brief with important navigation and security tips. Dinner and overnight.

7th day Posada Amazonas
Breakfast at the lodge. In the morning, walk (30min) to the scaffolding tower which will add a completely new dimension to the Amazon birding experience. We will see lonely raptors riding the thermals. This is your best chance for hawk-eagles and even harpy.
Paradise Tanager (Tangara chilensis), Green-and-gold Tanager (Tangara schrankii), Flame-crested Tanager (Tachyphonus cristatus), Turquoise Tanager (Tangara mexicana), Opal-rumped Tanager (Tangara velia), Cream-colored Woodpecker (Celeus flavus), Gilded Barbet (Capito auratus), Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana), Striolated Puffbird (Nystalus striolatus), Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis), Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus), Curl-crested Aracari (Pteroglossus beauharnaesii) and Brown-mandibled Aracari (Pteroglossus mariae).
After lunch, we will walk the Shahue trail.
Fiery-capped Manakin (Machaeropterus pyrocephalus), Round-tailed Manakin (Pipra chloromeros), Pavonine Quetzal (Pharomachrus pavoninus).
Dinner and overnight.

8th day Posada Amazonas
Breakfast at the lodge. Morning dedicated to visit the bamboo forest, located 15 minutes from the lodge.
White-cheeked Tody Tyrant (Poecilotriccus albifacies), Peruvian Recurvebill (Simoxenops ucayalae), Red-billed Scythebill (Campylorhamphus trochilirostris), Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis), Rufous-breasted Piculet (Picumnus rufiventris), Brown-rumped Foliage-gleaner (Anabates melanopezus), Large-headed Flatbill (Ramphotrigon megacephalum), Dusky-tailed Flatbill (Ramphotrigon fuscicauda), Dusky-cheeked Foliage-gleaner (Automolus dorsalis), Flammulated Bamboo-tyrant (Hemitriccus flammulatus), Dot-winged Antwren (Microrhopias quixensis), Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata), White-lined Antbird (Percnostola lophotes), Rufous capped Nunlet (Nonnula ruficapilla), Pheasant Cuckoo (Dromococcyx phasianellus).
After lunch, hike on the Shije'eje trail.
Variegated Tinamou (Crypturellus variegatus), Blue-crowned y Rufous Motmot (Baryphthengus martii), Golden-crowned Spadebill (Platyrinchus coronatus), Curl-crested Aracari (Pteroglossus beauharnaesii), Dusky-headed parakket (Aratinga weddellii), Black-capped parakeet (Pyrrhura rupicola), como también Cobalt-winged Parakket (Brotogeris cyanoptera), Spix's Guan (Penelope jacquacu).
Dinner and overnight.

9th day Posada Amazonas
Breakfast at the lodge. A thirty minutes by boat and forty-five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas will take us to the Tres Chimbadas Lake system.

Pale-vented Pigeon (Patagioenas cayennensis), Azure Gallinule (Porphyrio flavirostris), Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinicus), Slender-billed Kite (Helicolestes hamatus), Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis), Rufescent Tiger-Herons (Tigrisoma lineatum), Sungrebe (Heliornis fulica), Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis), Gray-breasted Crake (Laterallus exilis), Rufous-sided Crake (Laterallus melanophaius), Horned Screamers (Anhima cornuta), Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazín).
After lunch, excursion to the secondary forest.

Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus), Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant (Myiornis ecaudatus), Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus), Boat-billed Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua), Solitary Black Cacique (Cacicus solitarius), Gray-fronted Dove (Leptotila rufaxilla), Ruddy Ground Dove (Columbina talpacoti).
After dinner, night birding.

Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis), Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl (Megascops usta), Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis), Long tailed Potoo (Nyctibius aethereus), Ocellated Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus ocellatus), Mottled Owl (Ciccaba virgata), Crested Owl (Lophostrix cristata).

Overnight.

10th day Refugio Amazonas / Puerto Maldonado / Lima
Breakfast at the lodge. In time, transfer by boat to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to airport and departure on scheduled flight to Lima to make the connection with the international flight (passengers are requested to be at the airport 3 hours before international flight).
Southern Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus), White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus), Black-faced Tanager (Schistochlamys melanopis), Red-breasted Blackbird (Sturnella militaris), White-browed Blackbird (Sturnella militaris), Scaled Pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa), Point-tailed Palmcreeper (Berlepschia rikeri), Sulphury Flycatcher (Tyrannopsis sulphurea), Gray-lined Hawk (Buteo nitidus), White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus), South-American Snipe (Gallinago paraguaiae).
